About Sameer Films

SAMEER FILMS was founded by Sameer Butt who started his career in the media as a stand-up comic while studying architecture and urban design in college. But after graduating, instead of pursuing a career in architecture, he began to perform stand-up comedy. Sameer became a writer, contributor and performer on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, followed by Late Night with Conan O’Brian. His work has been cited in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek. While busy with all this, Sameer managed to put himself through Law School at Columbia University and also earned a Masters in Media Studies at The New School.

Sameer directed, co-wrote and co-produced Becoming Muslim in America, a feature-length documentary about American converts to Islam. Prior to that, he wrote and produced a news special for VH1 entitled Islamabad: Rock City in the wake of September 11. His screenplay, “Off Duty” was a Nicholls, Zoetrope, and Sundance Writer’s lab finalist. Sameer’s latest screenplay, “A Delicate, Scientific, Instrument” was a Sloan Science grant finalist. Sameer recently directed the narrative short Finding Comfort—a look at isolation in a vanishing New York City—which has screened and won awards at several festivals from Austin to Italy.

For decades Sameer has been a sought after commercial director, creating many of your favorite ads from Cadillac to Emirates Airlines in his signature grand and cinematic style. His op-eds have appeared in The Independent, Gannett, Des Moines register, Slate.com and The New York Daily News.
